'An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server responded:' Alert in Thunderbird
Today I noticed that since upgrading to Avast 8.x errors started appearing in Thunderbird (17.x) and it wouldn't download any messages from any e-mail server (neither IMAP nor POP3).
Thunderbird kept reporting an alert: "An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server responded:". That's it. No detailed messages as to what went wrong ...
After doing a bit of research I discovered that it had something to do with the recently upgraded version of Avast 8.
The solution ...
It's not that complicated:
- For starters you have to open up Avast, which is probably hidden somewhere within the lower-right corner bunch of icons, double click it's icon and Avast's window appears.
- Then click on 'Security' and under 'Virus protection' there's a list of shields (which areas Avast protects).
- Double click on 'Mail shield'.
- Then click on 'Stop' button and 'Stop permanently'.
And so Thunderbird receives messages normally as it did before upgrading Avast.
